What is a TAC?

The Type Allocation Code: the first eight digits of an IMEI, assigned to a specific device model.

Do I need the full IMEI?

For a model lookup the TAC is enough. Carrier, lock and warranty checks need all 15 digits.

Why does the model matter?

Storage and variant claims are the easiest thing for a seller to overstate, and they move the price a lot.
